Can you swim in Diablo Lake?
Yes (obviously not from the overlook). Before a bridge which crosses the southern spur of Diablo Lake, there is a camping ground at Thunder Knob Trailhead. Here you can access the water. A great place to swim and picnic.
Can you paddleboard on Diablo Lake?
If you access the lake right off the North Cascades Highway, you’re in a prime put-in location for your SUP or kayak. There are also numerous boat-in and camping opportunities on the lake for you to stay at.

You should never find yourself in the middle of an open lake when the weather patterns may lead to powerful winds.

What is the water temperature of Diablo Lake?
Seattle City Light manages the power generation as part of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project. The lake is a popular place to kayak or canoe, but be prepared for a chilly swim should the boat tip over; the water temperature of lakes in this area rarely exceeds 50°F, even in summer.
When should you not go kayaking?
We do not recommend going out on the water in a kayak when winds are 15 knots or more. More wind means more waves. Eyeballing the water will give you a good idea whether you should embark out.
Is 60 degrees too cold to kayak?
Water temps below 60 F/15 C can be immediately life threatening due to “cold shock”—you lose breathing control, your heart and blood pressure are affected, and your ability to think clearly is impaired. Kayakers are able to kayak in dangerously cold water—in very cold weather—when they’re dressed for it.
