Do water polo players tread water the whole time?
They are not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool and must tread water the entire time – although players use a movement called the egg-beater which is more efficient than the normal action of treading water. Players can move the ball by throwing it to a teammate or swimming while pushing the ball in front of them.
How long should you be able to tread water?
In average conditions most people would be able to tread water for up to a maximum of two to three hours – however, if you’re properly trained in the technique this can increase to over eight hours.
Maximum time allowed is 12 minutes, 30 seconds — but to be competitive, you should swim the distance in at least 8-9 minutes, utilizing only the combat swimmer stroke, sidestroke or breaststroke.

How often do you substitute water polo?
Either team may substitute players freely after a goal is scored, during a time-out, or between periods. During actual play, substitutions must occur through the team’s re-entry area (the corner of the pool in front of the team’s bench).
How hard is it to tread water for 10 minutes?
It’s nearly impossible for a human with air in their lungs to be negatively bouyant, certainly not SIGNIFICANTLY so. Ultimately, anyone can float/tread for 10min with no problem at all.
How long can you float for?
A person with average fitness and weight could tread water up to 4 hours without a lifejacket or up to 10 hours if they are really fit. If the person’s body form is favourable, they could survive longer by floating on their back.
Does treading water build muscle?
Simply treading water in a pool burns 11 calories per minute; that’s the same as running six miles per hour! The key is in resistance. Water provides continuous resistance, engaging more muscles through a more extensive range of motion.
