Can you kayak to Portage Glacier?
Portage Glacier and its lake were opened to kayaking in 2009 by the National Park Service. It’s also close to Anchorage! Floatation devices are a necessity: it’s glacial water, super cold, and full of silt.
Are there rules to kayaking?
Kayaking Life Jacket Law – All canoes and kayaks, regardless of length, must carry one wearable Coast Guard-approved PFD per person. And children under 13 must wear it at all times. Kayaking Lights Law – Between sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility, you must have legal lighting.
Is it safe to kayak in the middle of a lake?
You should never find yourself in the middle of an open lake when the weather patterns may lead to powerful winds.

When should you not kayak?
We do not recommend going out on the water in a kayak when winds are 15 knots or more. More wind means more waves. Eyeballing the water will give you a good idea whether you should embark out.
Can I launch my kayak anywhere?
Kayaks, canoes and paddleboards do not need to use boat ramps. You can launch from just about anywhere there is permitted access. Keep your vehicle off ramps designed for trailer boats.
